Peter Meilahn, MA.

Holistic Counseling

for adults, children & families

A Helpful Description:

Our services teach mindfulness skills with conseling. Clients have feedback from brain based monitoring that tells them when they are making more calm or attention that stops most problems.

The computer tells them that they are getting more stress and their attention is getting cluttered by lowering music volume, lowering light in the room, or making a movie dark or game stop (mostly for children). People change what they do to get those back and learn how to do it better and apply it. We also use drawing, painting or talking about life and other counseling needs while people heal and re-learn their health.

It is science meets entertainment and art interaction that is art therapy. Sometimes this type of biofeedback and counseling is called neurofeedback. If you are interested in looking at research results you can go to Google Scholar (www.scholar.google.com) and type in neurofeedback and whatever topic you want to see results for (like Neurofeedback Anxiety or Neurofeedback ADHD). You will see lots of research articles. We can use music, movies, games or people can control the light in the room while we talk oruse art. This is also a good way to talk about the mind and spiritual depths for those that want to discuss those topics.

This practice is supervised by Herb Laube, PhD, LMFT. He is the former President of the Minnesota Marriage and Family Therapy Board, and is on the Leadership Council for the Center for Sexual Health and Healing at the U of MN where he has been a faculty.

Services and Insurance:
  • Attention, anxiety, calm and pain are all positive or negative forms of attention in the mind and in the brain (the science shows this). Clients learn how they change their mental and brain behavior with live brain feedback in fun ways). Learning how to increase calm attention is a key part of healing and performance.

  • Natural methods with Computer Aided Feedback are a fast way to learn these skills (it is also known as biofeedback or neurofeedback)

  • It works with medication or as an alternative to medications in many cases. I have seen results that match research such as:

    • Reduction of ADHD symptoms by over 50%, dyslexia symptoms have gone down from over seven mixed letters and numbers to one, pain symptoms have decreased from a 6 to 0 in forty minutes and overall pain went down, weekly or daily panic attacks have stopped in under 3 weeks, migraines have gone from happening 4-5 times a week to 1 times per week, anxiety has been reduced so that people stop feeling anxiety about their anxiety and are able to manage life better and perform better, sleep improves and people have gone from sleeping 4-5 hours a night to 8 in weeks, mood has increased, tantrums from children with autism have gone down by 75% after sessions, gifted children learn to manage their minds better, and many other things. I can show research that has these results with other practitioners.

  • These methods are endorsed by The American Academy of Pediatrics, The Minnesota Department of Health and Human Services and others including insurances for anxiety and attention.

  • It is an exercise and it takes 50 sessions to fully learn a new way of brain regulation. Most people do two times a week but once still works. People are asked to look at it like an exercise or learning program.
